Who We Are
SCALE stands for Strengthening Communities for Adaptation, Livelihoods, and Equity. We are a community organisation led by women, rooted in Luweero District, Uganda.

Meet the people behind SCALE on the team page.
Our Story
Karen’s work in Luweero exposed her to the harsh realities of climate change and poverty within vulnerable communities. Through fieldwork and direct engagement with residents, she realised that it is difficult to talk about climate action when people are struggling to meet their basic needs. This inspired her to come together with like-minded individuals to establish the SCALE Initiative.
SCALE was founded on the belief that climate resilience and economic empowerment must go hand in hand. The organisation supports communities through sustainable activities that generate income, improve livelihoods, and help people respond to the impacts of climate change.
Every programme at SCALE is designed to ensure that communities not only survive climate challenges but also build dignified and sustainable futures.
Where We Work
We are based in Luweero, a mostly rural district in central Uganda where farming supports most families and the climate is becoming harder to predict. Our work stays close to the ground and is shaped by the realities of the people we serve.

Our Four Focus Areas
Climate Change & Health
Supporting vulnerable women and girls with health resources and education where climate change intensifies health risks.
Sustainable Agriculture
SCALE promotes sustainable agriculture and ecological conservation through farming that keeps communities at the heart of every decision and cares for the land. We share practical knowledge and current techniques, with a focus on organic growing and methods suited to a changing climate. Our model farm in Luweero is a learning and demonstration centre for organic farming, sustainable land management, and food production. We champion indigenous seed varieties to promote biodiversity, strengthen food security, and preserve local agricultural knowledge.
Green Business
Creating opportunities to earn income through circular economy initiatives, sustainable fashion, and green enterprises.
Sustainable Architecture
Building homes that stand up better to climate stress, with solar energy and rainwater harvesting, for the community members who need it most.
