SCALE: Strengthening Communities for Adaptation, Livelihoods, and Equity

Our Work

Climate change is never just one problem. Drought affects food security, which affects girls’ education, which affects community resilience. Our work responds to these connections.

Climate Change & Health

In Luweero, the effects of climate change are felt most acutely by women and girls. Prolonged droughts and food insecurity increase vulnerability, while access to basic health resources remains limited. SCALE responds at this intersection by providing essentials such as menstrual hygiene products and by offering health education rooted in the community.

Sustainable Agriculture

SCALE is committed to promoting sustainable agriculture and ecological conservation through farming that keeps communities at the centre and cares for the land. We empower farmers with practical knowledge and current agricultural techniques, with a focus on organic growing and methods suited to a changing climate, so that livelihoods and the environment can thrive together. Our model farm in Luweero serves as a learning and demonstration centre where farmers gain practical skills in organic farming, sustainable land management, and food production. In addition, SCALE is championing the preservation and reintroduction of indigenous seed varieties, which are increasingly threatened by the growing reliance on commercial and hybrid seeds. By supporting access to indigenous crops, we aim to promote biodiversity, strengthen food security, preserve local agricultural knowledge, and give communities healthier and more sustainable food options. Through innovation, education, and careful practice, SCALE is contributing to stronger farming systems and a greener, healthier future for communities in Uganda.

Green Business & Circular Economy

Environmental problems can also be economic opportunities in disguise. SCALE promotes sustainable livelihoods by backing green enterprises, from upcycled fashion and turning waste into new products to natural agricultural goods. These efforts open real pathways to income for women and young people while easing pressure on the environment.

Sustainable Architecture

Safe, dignified, and environmentally responsible housing should not be a luxury. It is part of what makes daily life workable. Through community fundraising and partnerships, SCALE works to improve living conditions for families who need it most in Luweero, building sustainable homes with solar energy and rainwater harvesting.
